10-Year-Old Compost Crew

As part of our ongoing science unit on gardening, the 10s have been hard at work caring for their compost pile since late summer. With help from the school’s maintenance team, two large wooden compost boxes were built on the upper terraces.

Every day, the “Compost Crew” collects organic waste from home and gathers scraps from the cafeteria. They add the material to the pile, turn it with pitchforks, and then let it rest to continue decomposing.

The goal? To create nutrient-rich soil that will fill our vegetable boxes just in time for spring planting. This hands-on project is teaching students about sustainability, soil health, and the cycle of life in the garden - one compost turn at a time!
