10YO: The Power of Poems: Writing, Reading, and Reciting

10YO: The Power of Poems: Writing, Reading, and Reciting

Throughout the year, and continuing through to the end, students in the 10YO class have been working with a range of poetry forms. These include haiku, tanka, lyrical, concrete, free verse, acrostic, cinquain, and diamante poems.

Students have shared their writing in a variety of ways, including small-group sharing, whole-class presentations, and hallway displays. These opportunities have allowed students to practice presenting their work and to see how poetry can be shared beyond the classroom.

In addition to writing, students have been reading, analyzing, and discussing different poems in groups. This has supported their understanding of poetic structure, language choices, and meaning.  Soon, students will get the chance to put their memories to test by memorizing and reciting poetry!
