8YO: Exploring Fractions and Finding a Voice Through Poetry

8YO: Exploring Fractions and Finding a Voice Through Poetry

The eight-year-olds in Ms. Brown’s class have been exploring fractions—what they are, how to represent them and how to identify as well as create equivalent fractions. Recently, they had a great time making their own fraction "pizzas" to show their understanding of equal parts and to see how fractions connect to the real world. In literacy, they have been enjoying the chance to express their creativity through poetry. They’ve been experimenting with repetition, alliterations, comparisons, onomatopoeias and rhyming in poems of their own. Students are honing the craft of bringing poetry to life by reading poetry aloud with expression, rhythm and flow.
