Message from Mr. Tempel and Mrs. Tempel 8/19

Welcome Middle School and Secondary Parents and Students!

I am excited to welcome you to the 2022-23 school year at Tirana International School! Once again our school has been under construction over the Summer as we continue to grow! Our Secondary hallway looks quite different this year as we needed more classrooms for our Secondary and Middle School students.

My name is Jeff Tempel and I am happy to be back as the Director of Instruction for Middle School and Secondary. I am extremely excited and looking forward to another amazing school year!

We start school on August 25 and this will be a half-day. Prior to that we are inviting our new students and families for an orientation on Tuesday, August 23. Then, we are hosting a “Back to School: Meet Your Teacher” morning on Wednesday, August 24. As we know that some of you have multiple students in Middle School and Secondary, we have created two SESSIONS so that you may have the opportunity to meet the teachers of more than one of your students. Students and families are welcomed to join either session. We are looking forward to seeing parents and students for an opportunity to meet teachers and hear about all the great things happening in classes this year!

Here is some important Back to School information:

There are many, many items to consider as your students come back to school. As we will send out more specific building expectations soon, please consider the following:

  • Community Consideration and Social Responsibility - Although I would like to say COVID is a thing of the past, we do still have to consider the health and safety of our staff, students and families.

  • As Albania lifted the mask and other COVID mandates last May, we will not be requiring masks for students at this time. Some staff may be wearing masks and students are welcome to wear them if they choose.

  • We will continue to be adaptable, flexible, considerate, and consistent in regards to families dealing with COVID.

  • If your child is sick, please keep them home until they are well!

  • Attendance - As you are aware, the best way for your student to learn is to be in class. Please encourage attendance everyday and remember that a day missed is an opportunity missed. In addition, with a Block Schedule, if a student misses one day of class, it is equal to two class periods for those four classes. However, we ask that if your student is not feeling well or running a temperature to please keep them home. We ask the same of our staff and want to ensure the health and safety of all our community members.

  • Support and Communication - As you expect these things from the teachers and staff at TIS, we need this from you, too! Please keep communication open, asking questions anytime and letting us know anything that can help us help your student.

  • Preparation - As teachers and staff work diligently to prepare for this school year, we ask that your student arrive to school prepared each day.

  • Other Classroom Supplies -

  • Pen/Pencil/Something to write with

  • Organizational materials - Folders/binders for organization are always encouraged.

Teachers and staff are eagerly awaiting the arrival of students on Thursday, August 25th! In the meantime, feel free to contact those in the Middle School/Secondary office with questions or concerns.

  • Shanna Tempel, Middle School/Secondary Counselor

  • Blerta Sadiku, Administrative Assistant

From the office of our Counselor, Ms. Shanna Tempel:

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year at Tirana International School! I am Shanna Tempel, the school counselor for all students in the Middle School (11-year-old through 13-year-old) and Secondary divisions. I am from Kansas City, Missouri, USA, and am beginning my 3rd year at TIS. I served for 15 years as a theatre and English teacher and school counselor in the US until my family joined QSI at Kyiv International School in 2017.

The TIS school counseling program implements the International School Counselor Association’s comprehensive school counseling model. My role is to oversee the delivery of the four domains of model: Academic Development, Career Development, Social/Emotional Development, and Global Perspective and Identity Development within the Middle School and Secondary divisions. My direct service to students can include large group, small group, and individual personal and social/emotional counseling and academic/university guidance.

Student conversations with the school counselor are confidential. My experience informs my belief that communication is the key to resolving a significant number of problems students discuss in my office. Knowing this, I work with students to find the words and best plan to approach communicating their concerns with family members, friends, and teachers when they are ready. A parent will always be informed if a student communicates a situation where they could be at risk of harm.

As a school-based mental health professional I am able to offer brief, solution-focused counseling and consultation for students and families. While it is not within the scope of school counseling to provide ongoing or therapeutic mental health services, I am available to assist in connecting families to outside resources when additional support is needed.

Students and parents are always welcome to schedule an in-school or virtual meeting with me here:

I look forward to partnering with you in the 2022-2023 school year!

Shanna Tempel

See everyone soon!
