Greetings TIS Families!

What a week it's been! There has been so much exciting learning happening across the school, and I am thrilled to share the highlights with you.

Celebrating International Counselor's Week

We kicked off the week by celebrating International Counselor’s Week. The students learned about it on Monday but kept it a secret until today, Friday, when they had the chance to surprise our wonderful school counselor, Mrs. Mudd, with heartfelt gratitude jars. Each class contributed notes expressing their appreciation for the kindness, support, and guidance she provides. It was a special way to show just how much we value her role in our school community, and Mrs. Mudd was deeply touched by the students' thoughtful gestures.

9-Year-Olds Visit to the Museum of Natural Sciences “Sabiha Kasimati”

On Friday, our 9-year-old students had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Museum of Natural Sciences "Sabiha Kasimati" as part of their Science unit, E03: Life Science: Animal Structure. The visit was a perfect extension of their learning in class. Students explored over 3,000 items that showcase the rich biodiversity of Albania, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and plants.

During the museum tour, students engaged in scientific inquiry by:

  • Generating questions about the internal and external structures of animals and how they support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction.
  • Planning and carrying out investigations to answer their questions, either individually or in groups.
  • Reflecting on how one of the five senses (taste, touch, sight, hearing, and smell) helps support animal survival and drives behavior.

This experience not only deepened their understanding of animal biology but also sparked curiosity and critical thinking that will continue to fuel their scientific exploration.

10-Year-Olds Visit to Divjaka National Park!

Today, our 10-year-old students embarked on an exciting field trip to Divjaka National Park! This trip was a fantastic opportunity for them to dive deeper into their studies of Life Science and Environmental Science, providing hands-on experience with the park’s incredible biodiversity and ecosystem.

Throughout the day, students:

  • Explored the park’s rich biodiversity, discovering the diverse plants and animals that inhabit the area.
  • Investigated the effects of human activity and pollution on the natural environment, discussing ways to help regenerate and protect the park.
  • Practiced understanding energy and matter in ecosystems by modeling how energy moves between plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment, exploring how these elements work together to sustain a thriving ecosystem.
  • Participated in case study discussions, examining the relationships between habitat, prey, and endangered species within ecosystems, and learning how changes in these areas can impact species survival.
  • Analyzed how organisms, including newly introduced species, influence their environment and the broader ecosystem.
  • Formulated claims based on evidence about human interaction with ecosystems, deepening their understanding of the delicate balance of nature.

The students had an amazing day full of learning and adventure in one of Albania's most beautiful natural landscapes. We are proud of their curiosity and engagement as they connect classroom lessons with the real world!

Looking Ahead

I can hardly believe it, but next Friday will mark the 100th day of school! What a milestone it has been! Alongside this exciting celebration, we’ll also be celebrating Valentine’s Day, making it a week full of joy and appreciation.

Valentine’s Day and 100th Day Celebrations
Since both Valentine’s Day and the 100th Day of School fall on the same day next Friday, some classes may be celebrating one or both of these events in their own special ways. Be sure to check Seesaw for updates from your child’s teacher about how their class will be celebrating these fun occasions!

Valentine’s Day Special Reminder
As part of our Valentine’s Day celebration, the Elementary Student Council will be selling special notes with a treat to send to fellow students. Each note will cost 100 lek, and we encourage each student to purchase just one note to ensure everyone has the opportunity to participate. It’s a sweet way to spread kindness and cheer throughout our school community! Last day to purchase is February 12th!

Parent Book Club Kickoff
This Friday also marked the first meeting of our Parent Book Club. What a wonderful discussion we had over the first few chapters of Raising Good Humans! It was a great opportunity for parents to connect and share insights on parenting in today’s world. We hope to see more of you next month as we dive into the next three chapters of this insightful book. Stay tuned for more details on the next meeting!

Reminder: Food Drive Still Running

A quick reminder that our Food Drive is still running until February 14th. If you have already donated, we thank you for your generosity! If you haven’t yet had the chance, there is still time to contribute. Let’s continue to share in the spirit of giving and support our community during this time of need.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic week ahead and all the celebrations coming our way!

Wishing everyone a wonderful rest of the week!
