MS: From Goals to Growth: A Year of Becoming Purposeful Readers

This year, our thirteen-year-old Literature students have been wrapping up a year-long Reading Goal Setting Unit—a project designed to help them become more independent, reflective, and purposeful readers. What began in the first weeks of school with students creating simple personal reading goals gradually developed into the creation of meaningful SMART goals—goals that were Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Following the fall MAP assessment, students carefully analyzed their individual reading data across three key areas: Literary Text, Informational Text, and Vocabulary. Using their results, each student identified specific skill strands within these categories that needed improvement and developed a personalized action plan to strengthen those areas throughout the year.

A major focus of this unit was learning how to take ownership of their growth. Students worked independently to monitor and document their progress using a variety of tools and strategies. Some maintained detailed reading logs, others used IXL to practice targeted reading skills through shorter passages and skill-based activities, while others turned to Quizlet to build academic vocabulary and reinforce learning.

Last week, students completed their spring MAP assessment and are now in the final stage of the unit—reflection. They are revisiting the goals they set months ago, comparing their beginning-of-year data with their current results, and thoughtfully evaluating their progress. Through reflective writing and discussion, students are identifying the strategies that helped them grow, recognizing areas where progress was slower, and considering what they would do differently if they approached the process again next year.

This unit has not only strengthened reading skills, but has also helped students develop self-awareness, accountability, and confidence as lifelong learners. We are proud of the dedication, honesty, and perseverance they have shown throughout this journey.
