SEC: Lab time in Science!

The new science lab benches are already being put to use for the AP Chemistry course. This summer, the maintenance crew of TIS did a tremendous job in adding lab benches, storage shelves, cabinets, electrical outlets, and 4 new sinks. Our AP students used the lab in these early days of a new year to complete two labs. The first was a quantitative chemical analysis of the concentration of dissolved ions in an aqueous solution. The second involved a quantitative analysis of a mixture of a heat stable compound and a related compound that decomposes at moderate temperatures. By determining the mass of the mixture that was lost to formation of gases and using a bit of algebra and stoichiometry, the masses of the two compounds in the original mixture could be determined. Physical Science, Chemistry, and Biology students will also benefit from this new workspace.
